The Lucas Terrier Club maintains a waiting list for homes hoping to have a Lucas. If you would like to apply for a puppy or re-homing a Lucas Terrier please read the information below. The application form is at the end.

The Lucas Terrier is a rare, if not vulnerable, breed. As a result we are exceptionally careful as to where puppies are placed as having one typically comes with a good deal of commitment which might not appeal to everyone. The commitment is to the breed; to helping ensure its survival. There are various ways of honouring that commitment: by breeding and breeding responsibly; by keeping the Club informed of changes in a dog, i.e. health, death; by being a Member of the Lucas Terrier Club.

Whether you acquire a young bitch or an old dog the key sentiment we hope all Lucas Terrier owners abide by is to not only think ‘is this good for my dog’ but to always think ‘is this good for my dog and for the breed’.

LUCAS TERRIER PUPPIES & RE-HOMING DOGS

All Lucas Terrier puppy seekers and those looking for dogs to re-home should note:

• You must brace yourself for a wait, possibly a long wait. There is no ready supply of Lucas Terrier puppies. And there are few re-homers. There are no Lucas Terrier ‘breeders’, simply dedicated, committed LTC Members who have pedigree litters, perhaps regularly, perhaps only once. So, it’s a waiting game but one that is well worth it.
• In years when there are exceptionally few puppies (sometimes under 10) all new puppy owners must be absolutely prepared to do their utmost to breed (unless there is some extenuating health or personal reason).
• As sometimes happens a dog or bitch may require castrating or spaying. Should that occur, the LTC simply needs to be notified, preferably in advance. We say ‘in advance’ as with dogs, semen can be successfully extracted and frozen. That small step prior to castration can help greatly to further the gene pool and hopefully result in puppies!
• Because a large degree of commitment is required, those who have had a Lucas Terrier in the past, and especially those who have bred, are often placed at the top of the list for puppies and re-homers. And all who are lucky enough to have a call saying ‘we have a Lucas Terrier for you’ must be prepared to meet the commitment.
• As occasionally happens, a Lucas Terrier needs to be re-homed. The LTC should be notified either to request a list of those interested in taking on a re-homer or to advise where the re-homed dog has gone so that revised Pedigree, Registration and Membership papers can be sent out.
• That if you are able to breed, you will need to follow the programme…PLL testing, IVDD testing, possible DNA testing, discussion with the LTC Breeding Advisor so as to ensure the best genetic match for a healthy dog. All Lucas Terriers derive from one line, the Ilmer line, which is what makes them very special, and puppies will not be given Pedigree and Registration documents unless the genetic match has been approved by the LTC.
• That if you do have puppies, we hope that one if not all will go to homes from the LTC's carefully vetted Puppy Seekers List. Or if puppies are going to family or friends we ask, as a formality, that you ensure they complete on the Puppy Seekers Application and that they understand the commitment required.
• Whether you participate in the LTC a lot or little or not at all, you should commit to remaining a Member for the duration of your dog’s life. This is important as the tiny annual fee helps to support the LTC’s health and breeding efforts. And if you choose to get more involved, it’s a great gang of Members and dogs who make it inviting, interesting and fun.

Yes, we know it’s a lot to ask and as you can probably now understand, having a Lucas Terrier is not for everyone, no matter how fabulous the home. BUT it is well worth the wait and the commitment as having a Lucas Terrier is a real and special joy. LTC Members come from all aspects of life. Many Members have had Lucas Terriers for generations. Quite a few have had many litters, year after year; a number have had just one litter; and some none at all. But all have the same underlying goal…of keeping this vulnerable breed going!

In addition to the price of a Lucas Terrier, breeders may add on costs for microchipping, PLL testing, vaccines, and vet fees. Please contact the LTC for the current price of a Lucas.

Below is the Puppy and Re-Homing Application Form. Please complete and be sure to state if you want your form kept on file for six months, a year, indefinitely. If at any time you wish to be removed from the list just let us know.
